New Harris office puts heat on adult businesses

Houston ChronicleThe county is trying to shut down D.B. Cooper's Mansion at 22565 Interstate 45 North, alleging in a lawsuit that the establishment is a public nuisance and has operated without a required sexually oriented business permit since 2005. Nightclub ownership is fighting to keep the place open, however, arguing they are not a sexually oriented business and are not required to have such a permit. They say they derive almost all of their income from alcoholic and food sales.

The Smoking GunPolice last Thursday arrested 18 employees of a Houston strip joint on a variety of charges, including prostitution and violating the city's strict regulations governing sexually oriented business. The May 29 raid at St. James Cabaret was carried out by Harris County Sheriff's Office vice officers following a weeklong undercover operation.

ABC 13 NewsA man was shot in the foot during a fight inside a southwest Houston strip club.Police say two men got into a fist fight around midnight inside the Riviera Cabaret on Westheimer and Briargrove. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot the other in the foot. The shooter took off and police are still looking for him.

The Smoking GunAn undercover Houston Police Department investigation at the Treasures club netted the strippers on a variety of charges, including prostitution, performing lewd acts, and violations of statutes governing sexually-oriented businesses (such as the dreaded "three foot rule"). The dancers--who range in age from 19 to 37--were booked into the Harris County jail.

Houston PressThough the council members primarily responsible for the stricter ordinance swore up and down they weren't trying to put Houston's 144 licensed SOBs out of business, a report by the city's Planning and Development Department estimates that all but 16 will be forced to close as a result of the new distance requirement -- equal in length to five football fields.
